Careers At Sea

Ratings route

You might start off being called an ‘Ordinary Seafarer’ but there’s nothing run of the mill about this maritime job. Join at support level and work towards professional qualifications, building specialist seafaring skills along the way.

The grades you need:

There isn’t a minimum academic standard, but we’d like you to come to us with three GCSEs or Scottish standard grades. This shows you’ve got the potential to get your professional qualifications. To begin your career at sea as a Rating, you’ll need to meet certain medical standards, including eyesight.

Is this the route for you?

Come to the role with bags of confidence and ambition and you could go from Rating to Officer Rank. There are plenty of further training opportunities for people who apply themselves. And lots of job options – from catering to engine room roles.
