I knew what I wanted in a career – travel prospects, a great salary, the chance of promotion and to work in an engineering environment – and I wasn’t finding it in Swansea. My father met a couple of Merchant Navy officers through his work at the dry docks, and a career at sea sounded just what I was looking for.
I applied to Bibby Ship Management and started a HND in marine engineering. So far I’ve been to sea once, working on the RMS St Helena, which is a passenger/cargo vessel. It was exciting to be part of an engineering team, responsible for taking care of expensive machinery that the whole ship relies on.
It’s hard being away from home for long periods of time, and my family miss me when I go away. But they’re mostly really proud of what I’ve chosen to do. And it’s a job that brings plenty of rewards, from the satisfaction of finishing a complicated task to the long holidays.
