Careers At Sea

Officer trainee HNC/HND courses

Whether its Navigation (Deck), Engineering or Electro-Technical Officer, there are two courses to choose from. You could go for the HND, which takes around three to three and a half years. Or opt for the HNC, which takes two and a half to three years. At the end of that, you can carry on for another six months to work towards the HND, or come back to it later on. And this course time includes your onboard training time, spent at sea understudying the officer of the watch role, as you learn how to become a professional seafarer.

The grades you need:

GCSE Grades A – C / 9-4 or equivalent Scottish Standard/National 5’s in English, Maths, a Science and at least one other subject. This may vary so do your research on the application pages before you apply.

Is this the course for you?

If you’re the kind of person that thinks in a practical way and likes hands-on learning that’s structured, then this could be the maritime training course for you. Courses focus on developing your maths and science skills, and you’ll come away with an HNC or HND. Plus you can continue studying to degree level.
